London's toughest food challenges
Do you dare to tackle something that goes by the name Beastburger? Fear not, there are no hidden critters, just a giant burger with a beef patty, chicken fillet, pulled pork and melted cheesethat’s about the size of a baseball. To win the challenge you also have to eat the burger’s weight in hand cut chips, all in under 12 minutes. The prize is your photo on the hall of fame and getting the meal for free.
Although there’s no prize at the end of it, if you manage to get through a phall curry at Bengal Village you’ll be joining the select few who’ve survived eating one of the world’s hottest dishes. Just to give you an idea, its name comes from “phallus”, supposedly to indicate how macho you have to be to eat it.
Most food challenges involve burgers or spicy chicken wings, but at the Bavarian-themed Octoberfest Pub the test is to eat two slow cooked pork knuckles with chips and sauerkraut. Those who successfully complete the Lumberjack Double Knuckle Challenge win a stein glass and get to see their photo on the online Wall of Fame.
The Terry Tucker Challenge at this traditional pub has a gentle eating contest with a choice of Shepherd’s pie or lasagne to be eaten within 20 minutes. More advanced eaters can order the beef, bacon and cheeseburger with chips and onion rings where all the ingredients trebled. The meal is free if you eat it all in the allotted time.
This American diner has two giant burgers on offer with four beef patties each. Choose from the Empire State and the Towering Inferno, the latter has jalapeno peppers and spicy piri piri sauce. The prize is the awestruck look of your fellow diners.
The Beast Burger is almost the size of a watermelon, no surprise given that the patty weighs over 3kg and there are seven slices of bacon. And to make sure you’re getting a balanced meal there’s a whole lettuce and seven tomatoes too. If you finish the burger plus half a kilo of chips and a milkshake you won’t have to pay the £60 price tag of the meal.
The Triple Chilli Challengehas it all:it’s gigantic, sweat-inducingly hot, and to get the meal for free you have to empty your plate in under 10 minutes. It consists of a plate of chilli cheese fries, a hot dog loaded with beef chilli, jalapenos and mustard, and a cheeseburger covered in – you guessed it - more chillies. Also available at MeatMission.
