Pubs in Peckham and South London

Proper. London. Boozers.

A Peckham pub is the place you imagine when you think of a great London boozer: some old boy propping up the bar, definitely a copy or two of the Racing Post on adjacent tables, great beer and a stella atmosphere. And who could want anything more from a pub than that?

What about beef carpaccio with warm olive bread and caper berries?

Sling yer 'ook!!

Priory Arms
83 Lansdowne Way SW8 2PB
Region: Vauxhall
Nearest Station: Stockwell (0.3 miles)

AIL Says: It is all about beers at The Priory. Emphasis is placed on mircobrews, real ales and exotic continental labels and it seems to do the trick of attracting a wide variety of aficionados to Stockwell.

Little Nan's
46 Deptford Broadway SE8 4PH
Region: Deptford
Nearest Station: Deptford Bridge (0.1 miles)

AIL Says: Serving cocktails and food in a space done up like your granny’s living room, it is a perfect example of Deptford’s creativity.

    Bar Story
    213 Blenheim Grove SE15 4NQ
    Region: Peckham
Nearest Station: Peckham Rye (0.2 miles)

AIL Says: Located in an arch below Peckham Rye Station, Bar Story is another unusual south London venue. Lively, friendly and industrial, the bar is popular for its cheap cocktails (2 for £7 from 6pm – 7pm daily) and local appeal. The sometime BBQ in the yard at the front is another reward for discovering this hard to find bar.

    The Canton Arms
    177 South Lambeth Road SW8 1XP
    Region: Vauxhall
    Nearest Station: Stockwell (0.3 miles)

AIL Says: The sister pub of Waterloo’s Anchor and Hope, The Canton Arms is another South London pub that is as good for its ale as it is for its food. The cosy pub is great for long leisurely lunches where the meat is matched by the real ale.

      The Sun
      47 Old Town SW4 0JL
      Region: Clapham
Nearest Station: Clapham Common (0.1 miles)

AIL Says: Clapham may not be the hippest place in London but its Old Town area is one of our favourite neighbourhoods. And that is largely thanks to The Sun. Great beers on draught, a lively atmosphere and a well-maintained beer garden are the key to its success.

        The Montpelier
        43 Choumert Road SE15 4AR
        Region: Peckham
Nearest Station: Peckham Rye (0.2 miles)

AIL Says: Pub, restaurant, live music venue and cinema rolled into one, The Montpellier is one of Peckham’s hottest prospects. Add the backroom cinema, which screens new films on a professional quality projector, and you won’t even need the bargain Peckham Plex anymore.

        Garrison Public House
        99 Bermondsey Street SE1 3XB
        Region: Bermondsey
Nearest Station: London Bridge (0.4 miles)

AIL Says: As stylish a pub as you’re likely to find anywhere in London, The Garrison has an irresistible sheen of chic about it. The food is modern European, drinks are all continental wheat beers and microbrewery tipples and there’s even a cinema room in the basement. Bermondsey’s finest.

        Effra Social Club
        89 Effra Road SW2 1DF
        Region: Brixton
Nearest Station: Herne Hill (0.4 miles)

AIL Says: Once headquarters of the local Conservative Party the Effra Social Club, between Brixton and Herne Hill, has replaced the fustiness (it was probably fusty) with fun. Quiz nights, live music, DJs, book groups and comedy share the retro space making sure there is always something going on.

        The Bricklayer's Arms
        32 Waterman Street SW15 1DD
        Region: Putney
Nearest Station: Putney Bridge (0.3 miles)

AIL Says: Very much a local pub, The Brick Layers Arms in Putney is a southern gem. With a ceaseless ale festival throughout the year it is no surprise that it is a favourite of CAMRA’s. Great for ale and old fashioned pub fans.

          Catford Constitutional
          Catford Broadway SE6 4SP
          Region: Catford
Nearest Station: Catford Bridge (0.1 miles)

AIL Says: After taking over a dilapidated old building, Catford Constitutional Club was launched. Not much changed in the handover so now you’ll find an old social club with all its original fittings with the addition of a lively events calendar and a great local drinks selection.
