London's best Karaoke bars

We check out the best...

Many people's idea of hell on earth, many people's idea of the most awesome night imaginable (and that includes a Black Lace comeback gig).

Whatever your personal opinion of karaoke, there'll be smiles and laughs aplenty. That's guaranteed.

So what does it take to host a great karaoke night? Well, there's the soundsystem, obviously; there's a willing clientele... and there's soundproofing. But more than that, there's a welcoming, forgiving atmosphere that - when you decide the time is right - will embrace your rendition of Wind Beneath My Wings and leave you feeling that, yes... you can fly higher than an eagle.

Here's our rundown of London's best venues for a spot of karaoke.

Old Queens Head
44 Essex Road N1 8LN
Region: Islington
Nearest Station: Essex Road (0.3 miles)

AIL Says: The Old Queen’s Head is proud owner of one of London’s most intimate karaoke rooms. Complete with booze button so you don’t have to drop the mic to get a refill and a dressing up box to turn you into a star, all you have to do is bring the voice of an angel.

All Star Lanes
Bloomsbury Place WC1B 4DA
Region: Bloomsbury
Nearest Station: Holborn (0.1 miles)

AIL Says: At its very essence karaoke is an especially naff kind of fun. We love it whichever way it comes but if you’d rather a slightly more hip version then there is nowhere better than the All Star Lanes. Club nights, live bands and bowling await you once you’re done with your private rooms.

    Lucky Voice Private Karaoke
    52 Poland Street W1F 7LR
    Region: Soho
Nearest Station: Oxford Circus (0.2 miles)

AIL Says: The karaoke chain guarantees you a mammoth selection of songs to make your own in a typically shiny, lounge bar interior. Highly technical and uber professional, you’ll have no technical issues here.

    The Birdcage
    80 Columbia Road E2 7QB
    Region: Bethnal Green
    Nearest Station: Hoxton (0.2 miles)

AIL Says: Located on Columbia Road, The Birdcage is a traditional boozer with a love for karaoke. Thanks to its hip location it has been co-opted by trendy locals as a jaunty hangout. However, when the lights dim and the singing begins, voices transcend generations and demographics as the music becomes the one true God that all can worship under. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like a superstar for five minutes, this is the place to come.

The private rooms are amply sized and the bars are generally decorated well. Just think, after a rattling your pipes at a Karaoke Box your friends will be saying, Rhydian who? Altogether now, ‘You raise me uuppppp…’

    41 Kingsland High Street Kingsland E8 2JS
    Region: Kingsland
    Nearest Station: Dalston Kingsland

AIL Says: If you like to sing on a full stomach then Shanghai Dalston is the perfect stage for you. Indulge in delicious Chinese food before sauntering into the back room for a feast of power ballads and cheesey karaoke. For an unusual sing-song this has to be one of London’s best.

Paradise By Way Of Kensal Green
    19 Kilburn Lane W10 4AE
    Region: North Kensington
Nearest Station: Kensal Green (0.3 miles)

AIL Says: Not content with being a bar, club and resturaunt Paradise by Way of Kensal Green took one more step towards monopolizing the nightlife whims of west Londoners by adding its very own private karaoke room.

    Bunga Bunga
    37 Battersea Bridge Road SW11 3BA
    Region: Battersea

AIL Says: Bunga Bunga is everyone’s favourite Italian-cum-Eurotrash nightclub, bar and pizzeria in Battersea. With a name like Bunga Bunga you didn’t think they were going to let themselves down by failing to offer karaoke did you? Tut-tut. Take the stage at this knowingly cheesy wonderland to belt out a classic and you will never regret it.

    The Social Bar
    5 Little Portland Street W1W 7JD
    Region: Marylebone
Nearest Station: Oxford Circus (0.1 miles)

AIL Says: Karaoke comes with a difference at The Social where the usual tracks are thrown out the window in exchange for everyone;s favourite rap classics. Think MCing rather than singing and you’ll soon get the gist of how Hip-Hop Karaoke rolls.
