August Bank Holiday: things to do

London Art Scene from The Art Stop

It's true, our (barely a) summer is coming to an end. But fear not because there are still plenty of exciting things for you to do this weekend.

Obviously there's the Nottinghill Carnival - a luscious Bank Holiday tradition that will draw in people from all over the country and perhaps, all over the world. But if you fancy steering clear of the craziness of Carnival, here are my top five picks for the weekend.

Hopefully, whatever you end up doing, it'll be sunny for you (although we can't control that, so don't blame us if it rains).

1. See One Day at the cinema Here's a film that's NOT to be missed (despite what you may have heard about Anne Hathaway's northern accent). One Day is based on the best-selling novel by David Nicholls and stars Brit actor Jim Sturgess alongside Anne. The film follows two college graduates, Emma (Hathaway) and Dextor (Sturgess), who having celebrated their last day as students end up spending the night together. From then on their lives are entwined and they become the best of friends. The film revisits Emma and Dex' on the same day every year - sometimes they are together, sometimes they're not. But slowly, their deep friendship turns into something more. However, as we all know, life and love never prove that easy. Take tissues. 2. Enjoy electronica in Clapham If you fancy a bit of a festival atmosphere but without having to leave the comfort of the city, why not head down to Clapham Common for the SW4 Electronic Festival. Underworld and Pendulum are set to headline on Saturday and Sunday respectively, while the likes of Wretch 32, Pete Tong, Shy FX, Magnetic Man and more are all due to make an appearance over the two days. Warning: This isn't for the faint-hearted. Tickets are available here: http://www.southwestfour.com/Tickets.aspx

3. Rent out Del Boy's flat for a night Only Fools and Horses fans, this treat is for you. Del Boy and Rodney's very own flat from the hit comedy show has been recreated in Peckham for two weeks only - and YOU could win a chance to rent out the replica for a night for just £18. All you have to do is head to www.facebook.com/goldtvchannel to enter the competition - and have your £18 at the ready. NB. The real Only Fools... flat was actually situated in a tower block in Acton, West London - and will be bulldozed later this year. Aw!

4. Rock out at Reading Fancy the festival vibe but with a few more mainstream names? Well, why not head to Richfield Avenue for this years' Reading Festival. The whole shebang kicks off on Friday and continues on until Sunday night and will feature My Chemical Romance, The Strokes and Muse as headliners. Other must-sees include Friendly Fires, Everything Everything, Warpaint, Elbow, Mona and Two Door Cinema Club. Day and weekend tickets are available here: http://www.readingfestival.com/2011/tickets/

5. Forget going out, throw a BBQ Yes it might sound like hard work - but fear not, because in this day and age there's a handy app to help you plan a BBQ. Yes, really. In fact Apetina cheese has made it SO easy for you, you'd be mad not to throw a party, just so you can use some of their ideas! All you have to do is head to http://www.facebook.com/apetina and let them do the rest. Go from having your entire BBQ sorted for you to simply getting a few new recipes under your belt. There's also an exciting competition to be won.
