ART: Amy Winehouse exhibition launches

London Art Scene from The Art Stop

It's a topic very close to many of us Londoners, especially the music fans amongst us. Amy Winehouse - so sadly taken away at a young age and so fondly remembered, for all her talent, beauty and brave fight against life's complexities.

Here her public image has been recaptured, by 60s pop artist Gerald Lang, through drawings and through paintings. It's a side of Amy we all saw, kissing Blake Fielder-Civil or indulging in a drink, but not all of us could capture Amy so remarkably.

Speaking of his exhibition, Laing, who became famous in the 60s for his paintings of Brigitte Bardot and Anna Karina explains, "These paintings date from 2008 - a time when each episode in Amy’s increasingly complex life was being portrayed by the media. My work is concerned with the myth, and portrays her as she appeared to us, the public, via the media. Now that the drama has ended, and all is quiet, I hope it will be seen as a tribute from one artist to another."

You can see Gerald Laing's Amy Winehouse exhibition from today at the Thomas Gibson Fine Art Gallery, 1st floor, 31 Bruton Street, Mayfair, W1J 6QS. Entry is free and it will run until 11 November 2011.
