Christmas Recipe :: Mincemeat...

London Healthy Living - Attitude To Food Blog

If you haven’t already gotten round to buying mincemeat, how about making your own this year? That way, you’ll be able to make it just the way you like it …and know exactly what’s in it. Here’s a recipe for mincemeat that I’ve been making for years …it’s delicious and super easy to make! Here’s what you need:

1 kg cooking apples, grated (with or without skin, you choose) 250g raisins 250g currants 75g sour cherries, roughly chopped 75g almonds1/4 teaspoon cloves 4 tablespoons agave nectar (to taste) finely chopped rind and juice of 1/2 lemon finely chopped rind and juice of 1/2 orange 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon A large glug of brandy

Here’s what you do:

:: In a mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients. :: Spoon into sterilised jars with tight fitting lids. :: If you’re not making mince pies straight away, be sure to turn the jars regularly so all the fruits get to absorb the brandy (not just the ones at the bottom of the jar).

Note: Substitute to brandy for apple, prune or pomegranate juice if you prefer a non-alcoholic version.

Makes about 2kg

Think of food as the most proactive form of health insurance …pay now, or pay later …why wait to get sick?
