TASTE ON TRIAL: SHURO SHIRIN

Love London

Shuro Shirin has one simple mission; for everyone to experience authentic Persian food. Set up by two brothers who were inspired by their mum’s cooking, they want to put Persian food on the map, with with its blend of aromatic flavours, spices and healthy ingredients. The range is full of winter warmers, sweet treats and wholesome dishes, with a mix of stews, rices, dips and soups as well as some new desserts.

Dishes are frozen as soon as they’re cooked, locking in flavours, eliminating the need for preservatives and therefore containing much less saturated fat, salt and sugar than other ready meals. During this recent cold snap we tried a few dishes and certainly weren’t disappointed.

The Persian Noodle Soup (£3.95) is a thick, creamy soup made with Persian noodles, chickpeas, beans, fresh herbs and soured yoghurt. With everything cooked from frozen, this a great shout to have in the freezer for days you need something warming and hearty but without the stodge. Packed with flavour, exotic spice and chunky noodles, making it really filling, it made a delicious change to the usual boring lunches from home.

Next up for supper was the Braised Lamb Neck with Homemade Stock (£6.15), with tender melt in the mouth lamb chunks slowly braised in a rich stock, accompanied by the flavourful Saffron Rice with Barberries (£2.30). Utterly delicious and you can taste the home cooking in every bite. I still have a Chicken, Pomegranate and Walnut Stew (£5.75) in the freezer ready for the next chilly evening.

When it comes to sweets, the range currently includes Honey and Almond Shortbread, Pistachio or Almond Baklava and Bamieh - handmade Persian donuts - (all £6.75 per box) perfect for sharing with a cup of tea for those with a sweet tooth.

If you’re keen to explore Persian cuisine before taking the plunge and investing in cookbooks and ingredients, Shuro Shirin’s dishes were delicious. Hearty, wholesome, full of flavour and you can really taste that they’re homemade; every bite was worth savouring.
