BFI 51st Film Festival - NFT Thieves (Ladrones)

KimT's London for Kids Blog

OK - So "Thieves" (Ladrones) is not a movie I would recommend for the kids but if you get a chance to see it then you really, really must. I do not have the necessary film critic vocabularly to describe the impact of the film's gritty theme of petty theft and its links to darker underworlds and the moody and daringly close shots of simply stunning young actors in clinically modern City environments. There are twists and turns in the plot that provoke deep unease, surreal moments linked to a mannequin and music that is engaging and as integral and layered as the characters. Some of the images and metaphors will remain in my mind's eye forever. For a foreign subtitled film with little dialogue - it was truly engrossing and yet gently provocative. And my friends in the know advise me that this was a first film so we are likely to hear more from its makers...

But don't forget that there ARE some great movies from around the world in the Family Gala section that are suitable for kids - for example, Bee Movie, Enchanted (kind of Cinderella in NYC), Island of Lost Souls, Kidz in Da Hood, Max & Co and Yobi the Five Tailed Fox. So there may be something in there for the kids over half term.

And if you haven't had a wander around the new BFI premises - the Film Cafe, the great new book and film shop there and the Mediateque then you really ought to. MOMI it's not, but it's still well worth a visit....and with so much else to do on the South Bank, you could easily fill a whole (cultural!) day.
