Kids in London - The Water Horse

KimT's London for Kids Blog

My kids never quite forgave me for liking the Ted Danson film called "Loch Ness" which was a little bit slow in developing (and you didn't get to see the creatures until right at the end) so it was with some reluctance that my daughter agreed to come to the cinema for this film.

But it was delightful. Almost like ET. Set in war time Scotland, it is about a young lad who is pining for his father who is away at war finds. His fear of water keeps him on the shoreline where he finds an interesting rock from which hatches a strange - and rather cutre and just a little bit naughty - creature that he names Crusoe.

The creature gets up to all kinds of mischief and then starts growing. Handily, he seems to like eating kitchen scraps so he is quite an environmentally friendly monster. My daughter particularly liked the bit where the bad dog Churchill chases Crusoe through the house and down the stairs. Some troops turn up to stay at his castle home (mum is a house keeper) and they start shooting large guns into the loch where the now very large Crusoe lives - causing him considerable upset. So there was a bit of tension in the film to break up the otherwise rather cheerful jaunt through the story.

The end is bittersweet but good. A thoroughly happy and harmless (if a little bit cheesey) film with a loveable and believeable creature (well I thought it looked like a plesiosauras) - proper family entertainment that you can safely take even quite young kids along to.
