Smiling single girls at the cinema for Sex and the City

London Event Reviews by May B

Well, despite having got up this morning at 4am for a work appointment at 830am in Bristol (yes, Bristol) I was home in time to get myself glammed up to have a couple of cocktails (Cosmopolitans, natch) with my girly girlfriends before FINALLY getting into the cinema to see the film that we have been waiting for FOUR long years to see.

In my local cinema there were only about three guys in the entire audience. Now THAT is true love and devotion. Anyway, all the other film goers this evening had obviously had the same idea about the cocktails first...our local cocktail barman was in heaven serving up more mojitos, cosmopolitans and long island ice teas in one evening that he had probably made in his entire career. This means that we all cheered when the opening credits rolled...and we all laughed out loud at the funny bits and "ooohheed" at the sad/bad bits and "wowed" at the fabulous fashiony bits. This was more fun than when we take our kids to the pantomine - and no one minded this enthusiastic audience participation...

Anyway. How interesting to see how we all dressed and did our hair for an evening with Carrie and Co. We dressed for ourselves. Yes, I dusted off my Manolas. And I wore a bright orange mac over ruffles and more orange. And my hair was in a messy updo. But there were some in jeans and some in sparkles and some in very daring but delightful prints. And we didn't care what anyone else thought because we were being true to ourselves and releasing our inner Carries (or Mirandas or Samanthas - although there weren't too many Charlottes - possibly too prim).

It reminded me of the heady days when I used to go to see the midnight screenings of the Rocky Horror Show in the Kings Road when it was an obscure culty thing to do - not mainstream. It reminded me of when we too were fearless young women who wore impossibly high shoes and scary short pencil skirts and still managed to run for the bus after a night dancing in seedy night clubs in Earls Court before it became a gay enclave...

And the film? Well, it really didn't matter as we had all read the plot and seen all the outfits in the publicity blitz over the past few months. But we watched in rapture the winning blend of girls having fun, sisterly solidarity, fashion with food with (beautiful) guys on the side.

They were our girls and they were fabulous - giving us hope that we could carry on partying and living our single girl City lives well into our 40s and even into our 50s. And guess what - it had a fairytale ending.

So watch out for those "girls" in high heels and snappy suits as they commute into town tomorrow - there will be a noticeable spring in their step. I'm loving it in London....
