Where to see comedy shows with a wedding/anti-wedding theme

London's Comedy Blog

Hello!

LondonisFunny.com is back with more comedy tips.

With the big day looming, comedy promoters and venues seem concerned that people will be so busy plunging their heads Scarface-style into piles of bunting/firebombing Buckingham Palace (delete as appropriate), they'll forget to go and consume comedy in the evening.

As a result, some comedy nights this weekend are now themed as a 'royal wedding special' or an 'antidote to the madness'. Others have discounts, while some just happen to take place on Friday and they've changed the title.

So should you come to your senses by 7.30pm on Friday, say "I do" to one of these:

1. Never Mind the Royal Wedding, Comedy Café in Shoreditch
Thanks to the nuptials, Comedy Café is knocking off £5 off entry for Friday's show, and the line-up is handy – Phil Nichol, Stefano Paolini, Tom Craine and Christian Ancliff. (Friday)

2. Stuart Goldsmith – Reasonable Man, Soho Theatre
A show worth going to see anyway, BUT, on Friday only, you can get half-price tickets by typing the word "reasonable" into the promo code box when you book through the Soho Theatre website. (Friday-Saturday)

3. John Kearns' Wedding Street (Dinner) Party, Canal Café Theatre in Warwick Avenue
(Almost) anything can happen at Kearns's monthly dinner party shows, which are loose and fun affairs, and this one has been hastily retitled, presumably when it was noted that the show clashed with the wedding. So there should be some Big Day banter. (Friday)

4. Banana Cabaret, Balham
Just a comedy show that happens to take place on Friday. No gimmicks, no fuss, just a qual line-up: Roger Monkhouse, Miles Jupp, Josh Howie and Angie McEvoy. Have that, zeitgeist chasers. (Friday)

5. Tim Minchin and his Orchestra, Albert Hall
Another must-see show, with Minchin joined at the Royal Albert Hall by a 55-piece orchestra. Being one of those militant atheist/rationalist types, might there be a Republican ditty up his sleeve as well ...? (Friday-Saturday)

6. Impropera Royal Wedding Special, King's Place in King's Cross
Improv specialists, who emulate the huge successful Showstoppers! by channelling their improvised comedy through songs. Wedding-themed. (Thursday)

7. Feeling Sketchy with Leads and Stern: Royal Wedding Special, Etcetera Theatre in Camden
A sketch and character night in which sketch duo Gemma Leader and Juliette Stern dig out the bunting and cake, plus a special "Royal" guest. (Thursday)

8. Pull the Other One, Tenant's Hall in Nunhead
The appropriate response to the wedding madness may well be to fight fire with fire, and go for something plain odd. This cabaret night in Nunhead has some off-the-wall acts including Holly Burn and the not-very surreal but always quality Earl Okin.(Friday)

9. The Alternative Royal Wedding Reception, Udderbelly on the Southbank
An expensive but well-endowed night, featuring Phil Kay, Abandoman, Pete Firman and Pippa Evans. (Friday)
