Top 5 places to see Edinburgh previews in London

London's Comedy Blog

Hello comedy fans and the comedy-curious!

With August and the Edinburgh Fringe a mere heartbeat away, comics are testing out their Fringe shows in small venues across London. And LondonisFunny.com is here to point you in the right direction.

Previews by nature are work-in-progress, rough-around-the-edges affairs, but nonetheless you get a flavour of the Fringe without having to jaunt 400 miles and spend a fortune.

So here are some suggested clubs where you can snack on some previews goodness:

• Hampstead Comedy Club (north London)
HCC is based in Pembroke Castle, a decent pub in Chalk Farm/Primrose Hill, and are previews every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Acts include Josie Long, Lloyd Langford, Tony Law and Henning Wehn.

• Invisible Dot (north)
The place with arguably the most impeccable taste on the circuit, located in the Camden market, and featuring Edinburgh Comedy Award winners Tim Key and David O'Doherty, plus absurdist Dr Brown, wonderful sister duo Toby and the revamped jazz-comedy wonder The Horne Section.

• Fat Tuesday (north)
Josh Widdicombe, Sarah Millican, and one of the best stand-ups in the world Glenn Wool (pictured) are among the acts you can see at the Compass in Islington, home of excellent fortnightly club Fat Tuesday.

• Crack Comedy (west, central, north)
A solid club that has three venues – the Grey Horse in Kingston and the Slug and Lettuces in Islington and Southbank. There you can see the likes of Paul Sinha, Pete Firman, Andrew Maxwell, Simon Munnery and Michael Fabbri.

• East Meets Jest (south)
The Railway pub in Clapham is home of East Meets Jest, which has an epic run of previews during July, where you can see the likes of Paul Sinha, Carl Donnelly, Mitch Benn, Andi Osho, Wil Hodgson and some bigger secret names too.
