London's Most Romantic Spots

Mr Beer Man

It’s been nearly four years since I fell for the leader of the pack and from those heart racing beginnings - stealing cars, matching leather jackets and pashing in the back row of the movies - the decline has swiftly taken us to the sofa in front of the TV, an ode to lost romance, excited only by well made croque monsieurs. Well, no more. We’re back on the love wagon and since that Hallmark holiday is months away and love waits for no one, here are some of London’s best places to get the sparks flying again. Remember, London’s your bedroom and that’s where the magic happens…

Scooter Works Cafe

The eagle-eyed will have spotted that heavy Shangri-Las reference in the intro and Scooter Works Café should follow on nicely from the Sixties girl-group/Westside Story tough-guy thing. It’s the former Vespa repair shop that ditched the grease for the greasers with a beatnik array of film, music and art to get your pulses revving. With fairy lights in all the right places, canoodleable (made up word alert) cubby-holes and an all round fog of lusty romance the place itself is so boss it might just make you go weak at the knees.

Wilton’s Music Hall

There’s no denying the romance of the past and since Wilton’s is the world’s oldest surviving grand music hall, its intoxicating credentials are safe. Crumbling, dilapidated and all but derelict – the romantic setting for ping-pong tournaments, theatre and music - it will not disappoint. It’s survived two world wars and with the help of the Wilton’s trust this amazing monument to London will live much longer. It’s enough to make the heart heavier than a litter of puppies in a bucket – and they’re all wearing sunglasses. Awwwww… Witon’s je t’aime.

Highgate Cemetery

Inspired by this week’s release of Midnight in Paris and the over-heaped praise that city gets from the lovers, I thought I’d highlight Highgate Cemetery – our own celluloid worthy whereabouts for London’s whimsical. How could you fail to appreciate each other with romantic rambling around the cemetery? Hand holding beneath gothic arches and weeping willows? It’s so much more than Paris’ Pére Lachaise Cemetery and it’s right on our doorstep. Just being there together will make you feel alive!

Union Chapel

Religion causes a fair bit of controversy, apparently, but we won’t get bogged down in that when there’s praising of another kind to be done– at the altar of love! The old big L, and Union Chapel is one of London’s greatest places to worship… each other and you’re favourite bands. There’s a lot of awesome anti-folk, acoustic shtick on the program and in the past it’s witnessed the likes of Kimyah Dawson, M Ward and First Aid Kit. A fine collection of dreamers I’m sure you’ll agree.

Garlic and Shots

Possibly as close as you’ll come to living out a little bit of Lost Boys/True Blood fantasy freakiness in the heart of Soho and it’s quite the hip spot for the hot and bothered. Disappear into the seedy basement for beers and garlic infused shots and spend the night trying to cancel out the heavy sour garlic taste in each other’s mouths. Delve into the ultra sultry alcove and let the sounds of hard rock crash around you as the mercury shoots upwards of ninety. Then cool off in the back yard with power ballads and more garlic.
