Free London: A two-wheeled weekend

Capital of Sport

Before I get told off for this blog being all about cycling (I'm an interesting person! I do other sports too!), I'm going to squeeze in one more bike-related post.

If you're stuck for something to do on Saturday, head to the Excel Centre at the Docklands for the Cycle Show. Entry is free, and if you want to make the most of the good weather then you could even cycle there - although the Limehouse section is particularly "interesting" on a bike.

What's going on at the Cycle Show? Apart from the catchy name, there will be the usual tasters, giveaways, competitions, Q&As as well as people trying to flog you stuff inside a huge, purpose-built warehouse. I love it. I will not fall into my usual trap of eating every single energy bar/gel/sweet on the sampling tray, tripping out in my sugar- and caffeine-induced high. No, not this time.

Oh, don't forget to see the other Great British cycling team, Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling, who will be making several autograph appearances at the show. Think you've seen their faces before? The team includes Olympians Laura Trott, Dani King and Joanna Rowsell.

But what's this all in aid of? You've probably heard about Sunday's road closures around London and Surrey. It's the weekend of the Prudential RideLondon 100, and the Cycle Show is where many of the 20,000 riders will go to collect their race numbers.

It's too late to enter - riders were drawn in a ballot last year - but it's not too late to join in the fun. Head to Stratford and watch the 11am start from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (yes, that Olympic Park), see bike polo, BMX demonstrations and watch the pros race it out on the big screen. How's that for a day in the sun?

The next blog post will not be about cycling, I can promise you that.
