Fresh breath Chihuahua from Pooch & Mutt

Dogs in London - The London Dog Blog

While I adore my darling dog (Alfie the Chihuahua), I do find that sometimes his breath can be a little – how can I put this delicately? – horrible! And not just when he has been eating dubious substances found in the garden (we are plagued with visiting foxes – why do dogs find fox waste so appealing?).

I’ve tried the dog tooth brush and toothpaste thing. Even with two of us bribing and grappling with him we still end up with more toothpaste on us than in his mouth. I’ve even tried charcoal based dog treats (which he carefully hides in the garden for those foxes so maybe he doesn’t like them so much).

So when Clapham-based Pooch & Mutt offered some samples of both ethical, grain-free, natural food and treats that are designed to tackle bad doggy breath I jumped at the chance.

Now the Fresh Breath food is just like other premium brands of dog biscuit that I buy for Alfie – and he ate them up at the same rapid speed. It’s nice to know they use ethically sourced British chicken. There’s citrus extract too to reduce plaque build-up too. So that’s a success.

The treats (parsley, peppermint and prebiotics) are quite large bone-shaped biscuits. These he took from me and trotted off to his “I’ll-eat-this-in-peace-under-the-long-stool-in-the-lounge-where-the-cats-can’t-steal-from-me” place. He usually only goes there when he has his much-prized pigs’ ears. I’ll have to break them up a bit if I’m to take them out and about otherwise he’ll stop in order to eat them – he’s only small.

But the best news is that Alfie’s breath is now minty fresh. Deep joy. So doggy hugs are now restored in this household.
