London Dog Blog – St Margaret’s Tavern, near Richmond

Dogs in London - The London Dog Blog

This is a large pub on a commanding corner plot in St Margaret’s, just across the river from Richmond. Most will know of it from rugby days as it’s close to Twickenham stadium.

But on my last few visits (on one occasion it was just for a coffee) – in the evenings – I have been struck by how dog-friendly it is.
There’s a huge bar area at the front where all the young folk hang out. It’s buzzy and has numerous screens where sports are viewed. There’s an excellent selection of wines and the service is brisk.

But towards the rear it opens up into a massive dining area. There’s a central fire place (which is very jolly in the winter) with a squishy leather sofa and also impressive winged leather arm chairs. There are lots of tables and chairs here too – in assorted sizes to suit couples or larger family groups. There’s also a surrounding area with even more tables.

The menu is rather good too. Starters range from £5.50 to £7.50 and include crispy pork belly, chicken, pistachio and tarragon terrine, Mirin cured salmon and sugar cured tiger prawns. Mains start at £11.50 and include Bavette and brisket burger, steamed sea bass fillet, pork loin chop, Grilled Devon lamb leg steak and Beer-battered North Sea haddock.

There are steaks and sharers too. And some delicious-looking desserts. There’s plenty of choice for vegetarians as well – beetroot carpaccio with goats curd and hazelnuts and pearl barley risotto with broccoli, runner beans, shiitake mushrooms, Devon blue cheese and toasted almonds.

And in this large area there are usually a number of dogs with their owners. Just sitting around and relaxing.

There’s a terrace at the rear with wet-weather umbrellas and cold-weather heaters. This looks over the reasonably-sized car park. And it’s just a short walk down Crown Road to the marvellous Marble Hill Park – much loved by local dog owners for its riverside walks.
