London Dog Blog – The Cricketers in Richmond

The Cricketers on Richmond Green is a famous pub. It has links to The Rolling Stones. And on rugby days it is always full to bursting. It’s a traditional pub with that dark wood, functional décor and a homely feel about it. It’s not immense and there is a TV screen towards the rear where important fixtures are shown. There’s a function room upstairs which hosts parties for the rich and ordinary locals.

There are a few benches outside on the wide pavement which afford a fabulous view of the green. And shelter for the smokers. And in summer months, people often buy their drinks and sit out on the grass to watch the cricket. Thus the name.

It’s one of my regular haunts – just behind the busy shopping area so good to rest up after rushing around the shops. There’s also a great pet shop tucked away in Duke Street just around the corner. And it’s within a stone’s throw of Richmond’s many restaurants. And the riverside walk – which is a major attraction for dog walkers – particularly as the car parking facilities in the Old Deer Car Park are so close.

The bar staff are super-efficient and cheerful – even in busy times. And there’s a good selection of wines if you aren’t here for the craft beer. I haven’t eaten there but there’s a menu covering pub favourites (burgers, steaks, sausage and mash, fish and chips – and Sunday roasts).

But it’s also one of my favourites as it is dog friendly. On most evenings there is at least one happy dog owner and his or her dog. I’ve met all sorts of lovely canines there – most recently a lively boxer who greeted everyone with enormous enthusiasm.

So whether you want a drink before or after your walk (and the green outside is a massive open area for running around and ball games), The Cricketers is a popular choice.
