Need a workout boost? Try Power of Boxing...

Love London

Surprising for me, I've so far actually stuck to my January resolution to get more active. While yoga and pilates have been doing the world of good for my dodgy knees, a couple of weeks ago I decided to try something a little more hardcore...

The Power of Boxing is the ultimate new boxing classes for those who want to experience the raw boxing in one of London’s oldest authentic boxing studios. Offering a 1-hour HIIT, non-contact, group fitness circuit in London’s most authentic boxing studios allows you to combine cardio boxing and technical pad work in the ring with muscle toning and core strength work. The class comprises circuits of pad work with trainers, bag work and upper body challenges, skipping and lower-body exercises and cardio - ensuring a full-on, full-body workout.

Now, in all honesty, I am EXTREMELY unfit; as in I only run if I'm about to miss a plane unfit, so this was always going to be a challenge. I admit, I was a bit scared, especially after I was puffing just after the five minute warm up. It just so happened I was in a group with one of The Power of Boxing's co-founders, Bear, who couldn't have been more encouraging. Knowing my fitness level was at zero, he was great at reassuring me not to worry what anyone else was doing, work at my own pace and do what I can.

I loved the ring work, though wish that part of the circuit had been first as by the time I got there, towards the end of my hour, I was bloody knackered. The trainers - headed up by Mark Reigate from Fitzroy Lodge (which has been an amateur boxing club since 1912) – range from former amateur boxers with over 100 competitive fights
to reformed offenders who have learnt their boxing skills the hard way. Passionate, enthusiastic and keen to push you to the best of your abilities, they were great to work with.

If you're after an intense, sweaty, all over body workout that will push you to your limits, you can't beat it. The Power of Boxing currently runs multiple classes in Lambeth and Battersea, with prices starting at £12.50 a class (with discounts for multiple bookings).
