Energetic rock and roll musical – Million Dollar Quartet at Richmond Theatre

London Event Reviews by May B

In 1956 Sam Philips, founder of Sun Records, arranged for Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis to join together for an informal jam session where they recorded some of the greatest rock and roll hits. This is the basis of the musical that sees the stories of how the four artists started their careers during the first half of the show and playing together in the second half. It’s live music all the way with a double bass player and a drummer providing backing for the three guitarists and pianist on the front line.

Jason Donovan, playing Philips, whilst a key figure in the production – was a rather low key presence. He didn’t sing a note. Ross William Wild had a voice uncannily like Elvis Presley and whilst his moves weren’t quite the real thing he made up for it with sheer enthusiasm for the role. Robbie Durham had a truly deep voice that evoked Johnny Cash as well as that almost uncomfortable shyness when in the spotlight. Ghost riders in the Sky was astonishing.

The undoubted star of the show was Martin Kaye playing Jerry Lee Lewis. He conveyed the overconfident young musician with comedic skill. And his piano playing was incredible – a hive of artistic musical energy that just didn’t stop.

As well as expected hits such as Real Wild Child, That’s all right, Let’s have a party, Walk the line, Great Balls of Fire, Blue Suede Shoes, Fever (sung by Katie Ray playing Dyanne) there were others such as Brown Eyed Handsome Man, Down by the riverside and I hear you knocking.

It was a mostly mature audience – I guess the rock and roll fans of the time. But everybody knew the iconic hits played. My companion enjoyed the show – particularly the second half. I couldn’t stop my foot tapping throughout and joined in when everyone got on their feet and danced to the finale of Hound Dog and See you later Alligator.

It was a joyous exploration of all things rock and roll with some rockabilly, country and Western and even Gospel thrown in for good measure.

It’s playing until Saturday at Richmond Theatre http://www.atgtickets.com/shows/million-dollar-quartet/#overview_tab

Then it continues on its tour around the UK http://milliondollarquartetlive.co.uk/
