Middlesex was awarded the title 'University' by Royal Assent in 1992. The University is now widely regarded as an excellent international provider of higher education with outstanding academic credentials and highly employable graduates.
Teaching at Middlesex University has achieved the highest possible ratings from the UK Quality Assurance Agency, and the University's research credentials are continually improving with key strengths in philosophy, history of art, dance, criminology, computing, environmental studies, business, nursing and biomedical sciences.
Middlesex University's history began in the late 19th century, when two educational institutions opened their doors in north London - St Katherine's College and the Hornsey School of Arts and Crafts. Both became part of Middlesex Polytechnic, which was founded in 1973.
Middlesex University previously had four campuses in north London - Hendon, Cat Hill, Trent Park and Archway; this has since been consolidated with all the University's teaching and research concentrated at the Hendon site. Here the Middlesex University Business School, the School of Health and Social Sciences and the School of Engineering and Information Sciences are based. A multimillion-pound redevelopment of the campus has made it one of London's finest learning and research centres, and the newly built Hatchcroft building, which features state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities and laboratories, has been awarded 'excellent' status for its sustainable construction by the Building Research Establishment. The nearest Underground Station is Hendon Central on the Northern Line, approximately 35 minutes from Central London.
