If you want to learn more about the history of Croydon from 1800 onwards, this is the right place to start. This new addition to the Clocktower (which is an arts facility hosting music, theatre and art itself) opened in 2006. Five different displays explain local history in detail, with a selection of curious displays that include a railway sigh asking people to refrain from spitting as well as Crystal Palace football memorabilia; you will even find items from the local IKEA store to commemorate its opening. Any doubts over Croydon’s worth as an artist’s topic are dispelled amidst the 2,000 paintings and prints of local life by illustrious artists such as Henry Moore. Aside from the permanent displays the museum hosts highly original temporary exhibitions, you are just as likely to see a collection of artworks created by people with autism as an exhibit on young people expressing themselves through body art. While you’re there, if you venture into the Riesco Gallery within the Clocktower you will also be able to see a collection of Chinese ceramics that date back to 2500 BC. Admission is free and the museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10.30 am to 5 pm.
