Best known for being the main thoroughfare leading up to Oxford Street and for its electrical and furniture shops, up until the 1900s this was a sleepy rural road with little activity. A mini-shopping mall with branches of Boots, Muji and a Sainsburys is located next to Tottenham Court Road station, which is best avoided at rush hour times if possible. The overcrowding has been made worse by the Crossrail expansion, which has resulted in sections of the surrounding roads being closed off -at the time of writing, it is scheduled for completion in 2017. Upmarket homeware stores Heal’s and Habitat are on the opposite side of the road from Micro Anvika, the Sony Centre, and numerous other computer and camera shops. The brutalist 32-storey Centre Point building serves as a divider between Tottenham Court Road and Charing Cross Road to the south; it contains offices and a private member’s club, Paramount, on the top three floors, which occasionally hosts club nights and other events.
