This stylish city bar sits at the base of The Gherkin, one of London’s most famous and iconic buildings. The food is all freshly prepared and there’s a great range of wine and drinks to accompany a meal or just to complement good conversation. The glass walled, main bar offers plenty of space and great views out onto the concourse and the impressive architecture and unique design make The Sterling a trendy spot in the centre of the City.

All In London Review

Big, busy stylish bar underneath the Gherkin

Review Image
If you work in the City or have friends in the insurance industry (as I do) then you will know this fabulous bar. Most people know it as the Gherkin Bar but its actual name is The Sterling Bar.

You really can’t miss it as there is a huge outside seating area with table service which is perfect for balmy summer evenings after work. And it was positively mobbed when we went there.

Inside is just as impressive. There’s a large bar area with raised stools and plenty of standing space. Move further inside and there are conventional tables and chairs if you prefer to sit and a fair few open booths which make it perfect for groups or private parties.

The décor is interesting. There are designer touches like modern cream and pink club chairs with gold framed pictures and wooden African masks on the walls. The overhead feature light fittings are nice too. There are fresh flowers on the tables.

There’s an open staircase up to the mezzanine or minstrel’s gallery if you prefer your table in a slightly calmer environment. You can peer down onto the action below from there. The loos are up here too. The floor to ceiling window walls mean that everywhere is light and airy. The music is loud and eclectic but not deafening. There’s a definite party-feel about the place.

The menu is typical bar food – burgers (£10 with chips), chicken or pizzetta. Very reasonable prices for the centre of the City. Cheese and charcuterie boards seem popular. There are also olives (£2.75) or nuts (£2.50) if you just want to nibble.

But we were just there to enjoy a drink and a chat. And it’s open late on Wednesdays (til 12pm) and Thursdays and Fridays (until 1am or 2am).

Please note that it is closed at weekends.
