All In London Review

Shabby chic meets lavish at West London music venue

Despite its grand interior Bush Hall has accommodated the likes of pop performers Scissor Sisters, Gnarls Barkley and Amy Winehouse during the last decade, but although big names frequently grace its velvet-curtained stage a look down their listings is more likely to yield performers from the worlds of blues, folk and country as well as comedy nights. Originally built in 1905 as a ballroom venue, Bush Hall has had several incarnations, as a restaurant during World War II, a bingo hall, rehearsal space (which saw the likes of The Who and Adam Faith turn up for practice), snooker hall and afterhours watering hole. The ornate chandeliers still hang from the ceiling and the intricate plasterwork still exists - to give you an idea of its décor, the venue is plush enough to be frequently hired out for weddings. Despite this it has been allowed to age a little, and the aesthetic is shabby chic meets lavish, perfect for the trendy crowds who gather here to catch the live music. As a general rule the headline act usually starts sometime after 9 pm, in any case, this being a residential area means the music has to stop at 11. Admission fees can be anything from £5 to £25, depending on the act. Other amenities include the two bars, which sell bottled beers or a glass of wine for £3.80, and a terrace for smokers. Also a popular location for BBC corporate events, record label showcases and private parties – check listings before you go.

London's best gig venues

Here are our top choices for gigs and concerts...

A lot of the older venues in London are blessed with a banked floor that allows the people at the back a look at the action on stage. Well, Bush Hall is not one of those places. The flatness is part of the charm, as is the guaranteed sight of groups of friends sat cross-legged on the carpeted floor before the start of shows. Bush Hall is the indie-darling of London concert venues.
