All In London Review

One of the last London superclubs has lost its momentum

Reviewing a nightclub is always a hard task; some nights can be akin to religious experiences whilst others you wish you’d stayed at home with a cup of tea. The DJ, the crowd, and the promoter all have their parts to play.

Egg has hosted some amazing nights, however despite having had huge names on the bill such as Techno God Carl Craig, New York legend Timmy Regisford, and the UK’s very own X-Press 2, Egg seems to have lost some of its momentum of late, turning towards Ibizan sounds with nights like Amnesia and Space. Perhaps the extortionate door fee (usually around £15) has a part to play, as in the current recession people are turning away from the super clubs and towards more intimate venues with lower charges.

In terms of layout, Egg really comes into its own in the summer months, when DJ’s play outdoors in the courtyard. There’s something rather magical about dancing outside as the sun comes up in the early morning. Back indoors there are two dancefloors, each with a bar, the main room being downstairs. The sound system is good but is by no means one of the best in London.

Staying open well into the mid morning is another selling point, with after hours parties like Breakfast going on until 1pm.

Egg is not a friendly club. Groups of young men have been rather aggressively turned away at the door, as the bouncers suspected they might cause trouble without a female presence. Expect a very thorough bag/body search and bouncers parading throughout the club with flashlights.

Though having opened far more recently, Egg is one of the last London superclubs along with Fabric and Ministry of Sound, and many people often go along purely for this reason. If you’re after a more laidback, intelligent, all-about-the-music-venue, then you might want to go somewhere else.

Went there on a Friday night, Strict search but I think it's needed with all the horrible things and acid attacks going on in london. Better safe than sorry!

Great music and the sound system is very good. They have 4 or 5 different rooms. You get served quiet quickly at the bars which is great as not clubs bars I've visited take ages. Will visit again.

Great music, cool club. Horrible, seedy, sinister atmpshere tho. Everyone, and I mean everryone, is high on drugs. The bouncers are aggresssive, the crowd is volatile, the men are very aggressive with girls and there are often fights. If you like drugs go, if not, youll hate it.

It's a bit of a faff to get in as the people on the door are either moody or don't know what they're doing, but overall Egg is a good club. They've just installed a new soundsystem which is really good, although it's still no match for Fabric's.

Wow quite an attack from Jessye.

I really dont know what you are talking about. When I went I got a ticket for online for £13. The bouncers were pretty thorough but I prefer it that way, safety first and all that. I certainly didnt experience the crack den Jessye describes, there are always going to be certain unpleasant elements in any club but I did not see any of it in Egg.

As for the music, If you aren't a proper dance music fan then just dont go. I am a massive house fan and I thought the music was great!

I am just surprised by your comments as they are pretty much the opposite of my experience.

Only go if you want to get practically strip searched by the bouncers, are ok paying £20 entry for a night where they play practically the same track for the whole night with a repetative beat, dress code is very casual, everyone is high on ket, no one is friendly as they are all doped up in their own little world, drinks are really expensive, you get asked if you have drugs on you every ten minutes, the toilets are grotty with drug packets on the toilet seats, your feet stick to the floor coz its so dirty and by the end of the night when the guys are less high they all start asking you to come back to their place for a 'few beers' .... no thanks. Even though there was such a strick search at the beginning of the night we saw someone sniff a load of drugs infront of the owner/main bouncer and he didnt care at all.

So if you a complete smack head, youll have a great time... if not avoid it at all costs!
