Traditional features, extremely well kept and a nice location...
The outside area isn’t quite as nice though – it is tucked onto the corner of New Kings Road and Peterborough Road - cramped onto a narrow pavement but my companion liked it. And the traffic noise wasn’t too bad. Plus it would be easy enough to take your drinks across the road to sit (or picnic as many were) under the trees on the green. It’s an ideal meeting point. There were plenty of folk here on a Saturday evening around 7pm who were either meeting to start their evening here or settled in for the night. The young in a Young’s pub.
The interior is rather lovely – a traditional vast square space with tables and chairs as well as a couple of sofas. Nice character windows providing plenty of light. Striking traditional tile decorations on the walls, a proper fireplace (bet that’s cosy in the winter) and, behind the bars, interesting decorative screens. The actual bar is in a narrower (but still plenty of space) area and facing a series of high tables and stools.
The Young’s bitter for my companion was well kept and presented. My Pim’s was exactly as it should be – including strawberries. He said one member of the bar staff was busy and pleasant and the other was not so busy and a tad surly. When I went to the bar I was kept waiting a fair while – and without even a nod of acknowledgement as I stood there.
It was a bit fiddly connecting to the wi-fi but we managed in the end. On the way to the loos there is a coffee machine – and I wasn’t that happy to find a lack of loo paper there. Further into the interior and you reach a dining area – but I didn’t have time to check out the menu – and it looked pretty empty to me – maybe it was too early in the evening, or maybe it is busier during the day.
The web site has a neat interactive floor plan showing seating capacity and on which you can select to reserve particular areas – even the outside seats. It also shows the full wine list. They were offering BBQ food when we were there – from minute steaks, to burgers and chicken – all in baguettes – from £6.
But overall this is a pretty good pub. A good size, traditional features, extremely well kept and a nice location. Maybe I was just unlucky with the bar staff – as everyone there appeared to be having a thoroughly good time.
