All In London Review

The Marksman is the pub that just keeps giving.

The Marksman is the pub that just keeps giving. Whether it is hip pub quizzes, mouthwatering roasts or a place to rest those weary feet after market day that you want - this is your place.

Located on Hackney Road – a very short walk from Columbia Road Flower Market – The Marksman is a testament to what a lot of effort and some big ideas can do for the fortunes of a neighbourhood pub. The interior is all about traditional pub décor, complete with bar rails and masses of dark stained wood to go along with its low tables and comfortable seating. Cozy is the word for this beacon of fun halfway down Hackney Road, where a glimpse through the window into the mad glowing interior is enough to make you drop your bags and dash in for the nearest table. Private dining for large groups is available on the first floor.

It’s not just its classic charm that keeps the Marksman swollen with customers though, look around and you’ll begin to notice the presence of some of the quirks that make it that little bit out of the ordinary. Art bartering with the landlady has been known to occur as payment for drinks, while a quick look at the events lineup and the Fashionable Pub Quiz might turn a few heads. Those who know more about Prada than they do about the Prado might want to make this their regular where questions cover the world of fashion and style rather than general knowledge.

The Marksman roast is an institution in this part of London and unless you book in advance tables are fairly hard to come by. There is usually a choice of beef or rare breed pork as well as vegetarian options. The rest of the menu is a rotation of gastro inspired modern European cooking that has never left this reviewer dissatisfied. Timothy Taylor’s is on the pump as well as the usual Stella and Red Stripe.

The Marksman is not strictly for the locals and hasn’t been for a while, not since news of its evocative charm broke out of the east to the rest of London. You can now find a mixed crowd that includes the young and hip along with families and visiting tourists – and its a mix that seems to mesh.

Best places to munch a delicious Sunday roast

Clear your diary this Sunday and take in one of these badboys...

A Sunday roast isn’t solely about the food. Obviously, that’s the name of the game but without the venue to support it you might as well be at home. The Marksman on Hackney Road is a warm, intimate pub boasting just the right amount of rustic, east-end charm. The roast also happens to be delicious. Served on long narrow plates, portions are deceptively large. The highlight is the pork belly – if you’re that way inclined.
