All In London Review
A handsome, grand and ever so slightly irreverent pub
Located a short walk from the high street, the pub couldn’t be further from the bustle of the constant traffic that flows along the busy road. A former bowling clubhouse – hence the name – this is yet another feather in the Antic Group’s cap. Inside the pub there is a clear respect for what came before. The old bowls memorabilia and original fixtures and fittings make for a handsomely grand, irreverent interior. Eat in the ‘main hall’ or hide away in one of the many nooks and crannies, the Balham Bowls Club is a pub whose agenda is clearly to provide you with the comfort to while away the hours on lazy weekends.
The crowd is family heavy, so if you find the sight of buggies and babies incongruous in the surroundings of a pub then you won’t like it here. But, bonus, dogs are welcome, which is another nod to the Balham demographic.
Having sampled the Sunday roast, we can recommend eating here. Reasonably priced, quality ingredients and healthy portions. Separate bar and dinner food menus offer a range of options clearly a cut above the usual pub offerings; think confit duck leg and pork, pistachio & apricot terrine.
We were impressed by the drinks selection. While some Antic pubs keep it relatively simple the Balham Bowls Club goes large with a range that includes local brews from the likes of Late Knights Brewery and plenty of real ale.
Aside from a Tuesday night quiz, the pub hosts an irregular calendar of events. Although, in a pub this good looking the interior was entertainment enough for us. That and three pints of Beavertown Neck Oil.
