All In London Review

Best. Beer Gardens. Ever.

If there’s one thing you can rely on with a JD Wetherspoon pub, it’s that it’s going to be cheap. However, you can also be fairly certain that it’s going to be housed within a grand, palatial pile of bricks that no other pub company could afford, which is just the situation you’ll find at the Fox on the Hill.

Located at the top of Denmark Hill in Camberwell, the vast pub is pleasantly perched with views out over central London (at a stretch), complete with front and back gardens and conservatory. While the interior has all the originality of every other Wetherspoon – think heavy, dark wooden furniture, comfortable carpet and an almost-there homely appeal – it’s those gardens that make this a pub worth visiting. Now, we’re not snobby at All In London; every pub, club, restaurant and bar is judged and reviewed on merit, but given the ubiquity of Wetherspoons pubs, there aren’t many of them that we would classify as ‘must visits’. So in this instance, the Fox on the Hill is a rarity, thanks to those gardens. For the sweeping views, spacious grassy plots both front and back and picnic tables aplenty, summer pub days here are a winner. But when winter comes, forget it as it reverts back to the average Curry Club toting, Burger and Beer dealing bargain beer hole.

By all means visit, just make sure it’s when the weather’s warm.
