All In London Review

Something to please everyone... a favourite in West London

A spectacular huge and traditional (but clean, well cared for and spacious) Fuller’s pub with something to please everyone. It is something of a favourite in West London.

Located just off the A316 Chertsey Road behind St Stephen’s School, in the heart of a rather wealthy neighbourhood, it is a well known pub for those who visit the area on rugby days (in fact, there are a number of modern black and white rugby photos and an assortment of older rugby drawings on all the walls – although they do not dominate the environment). There are numerous screens to show sports on key match days but they do not tend to interfere with those who aren’t so keen.

But it is equally well known for being child friendly. And the nearby school provides a good trade during school hours (from the parents!). It has a really large outdoors area – with lots of covered areas (huge square parasols providing complete protection from the rain), a barbeque and a pretty wooden play area with rubber matting, a slide and climbing frame for smaller kids. Families are also welcomed inside within the rather large, eating area that adjoins the bar which has a well equipped baby change facility.

Also outside is a tiny shed (a smokers’ retreat in inclement weather?) and two large tinkling brass water features – good job the loos are nearby and plentiful! Rush screening provides a sense of privacy although you can see the tops of the neighbouring houses nearby.

The pub adjoins Winchester Hall which is a function room that hosts the Bearcat Comedy club and numerous music, impersonator and other entertainment evenings. The bar also occasionally hosts quiz nights and music nights.

The main bar is L shaped, with a polished top, wooden tables and chairs and even a leather sofa. The windows are large (with nice stained glass bits at the edges) and afford a view onto the leafy suburb street (which means that parking near here is a challenge).

The staff are a friendly lot – happy to chat a bit but equally at ease if you want to keep to yourselves.

With regards to the food it could probably best be described as “anything hearty”. The menu includes fish pie (£7.95), ham, egg and chips (£7.25), sausages and mash (£8.25), salmon en papillote with rice (£10.25) and beef stronganoff and rice (£12.95). Sides include chips (£2.25) and minted new potatoes (£1.95). Desserts include lemon meringue mess and bakewell tart and are priced at £4.95 to £5.95). And each day there are numerous specials – when I was last there these included spinach and nutmeg soup (£3.50), chicken arrabiata (tomato and chilli) pasta and bread (£8.50) and spinach and mushroom risotto (£7.25).

There is also a selection of “lite bites” (£3.75-£5.50) for those who are concentrating on their drinking including items such as lamb koftas, whitebait, houmous and mushroom pate as well as the usual selection of nachos, chicken wings, salads and burgers. There are also sharing plates (from £5.25).

The bar remains busy day and night – with an assortment of people, although the evening visitors are usually a comparatively younger crowd.
