All In London Review

Refurbished and refreshed

Review Image
This place was rather tired with poor quality food and a lacklustre service. But all that has changed following a major refurbishment, a new management team, a new chef and a new menu.

I went along to the re-opening event in March 2018 and all the staff were keen and excited. The place was buzzing with locals and those who had travelled from a bit further afield.

The Winning Post covers a huge space. There are several smaller bar areas at one end – some with great black and white tiled flooring and high stools and others with more comfy chairs and carpet. Then there’s a long general bar area connecting the bar areas with the dining areas.

The dining area has a number of separate but connected spaces – some of which are elevated. It’s all been freshly painted in a soft, restful sage green with interesting wood inlay wall features. One wall has a hand painted mural of rugby scenes (it’s just a 20 minute walk to Twickenham stadium) and other walls had tasteful small prints. It had a relaxed and comfortable feel. Intimate even.

The new menu is extensive – steaks, burgers, seafood and fish, lamb shanks, fish and chips, skewers, salads and even some Indian options.

My chicken liver pate arrived on a wooden block with a jar of pate, pots of butter and relish and a stack of toasted bread. My companion enjoyed some spicy garlic mushrooms. My seafood risotto was incredible – large slices of sea bass and succulent scallops. The rice was perfectly cooked. But I was a little envious of my companion’s seafood mixed grill - a mountain of fish fillets and a large pot of chips. Our sauvignon blanc wine was well chilled and tasty.

I’m delighted to have another good place to eat so close to home and away from the bustle of Twickenham and Richmond town centres. And it has the makings of a fine local pub too. It’s suitable for couples, groups and families. The prices are more than reasonable.

Alongside the pub is a function hall – The Harlequin Suite – with its own bar and entrance. This too has been tastefully redecorated and offers two huge seating areas and a sizeable dance floor. I suspect that the venue can accommodate hundreds of people. During the week there are regular events here such as Ceroc and Zumba classes as well as Motown dance events.

It’s a 10 minute walk from Whitton train station. There’s a large car park – right on the A316/Chertsey Road. There’s also a Premier Inn next door.
