Football, football and more football...

Review Image
Much like Liam Neeson’s character in the sublime movie Taken, some pubs have a very specific set of skills. A set of skills that means they can appeal where no other pub can. Sure, these skills don’t come in handy in hostage situations, when tracking family members or slicing and dicing villains but they do help when it comes to 3pm on a Saturday afternoon...

Located in a residential spot, tucked away from Kingsland Road, The Duke of Wellington is the epitome of a quiet local. Tidily decorated, it comes complete with a pool table, cushioned, carpeted floor and plenty of seating set against the walls and beneath the windows. But for many visitors, all this information would be irrelevant were it not for the fact that the pub shows A LOT of football. For ‘football-showing’ is the Duke’s set of skills. Sure, it’s a nice pub and a place on one of the picnic benches in the mini paved square outside is bliss during the summer months but it’s the football that reels the non-locals in. Where else can you watch a whole day’s worth of English football? Early kickoff, then onto the normally unobtainable 3pm, before wrapping up with the late afternoon game – and perhaps even staying on for a little La Liga action to take the edge off a marathon Premier League session?

You’ll find Guinness, Stella, Fosters and Doom Bar in the way of beers, a selection of spirits and a small range of wine, which is a collection that’s more than capable of keeping you company for those long Saturdays throughout the year.

There is one reason for visiting the Duke of Wellington and that is football. Not that there's anything wrong with the place, it's a small, east end local. Everyone knows each other and the clientele is nicely mixed.

But, it's all about football. They show it all, even the 3pm games that don't traditionally get shown in pubs - wink wink, nudge nudge.
