All In London Review

people trek here from halfway across London in search of the hip pool table

More than just a good local, the Prince George has been fooling people into thinking it was just that standard pub on the corner for years. Hidden away on the back streets between Haggerston and Dalston it’s a striking old building that makes a grand setting for what’s inside. Sleepy roads on the outside but get in the door and the order at the bar is a barely audible whisper above the noise from what’s supposed to be a finely stocked jukebox.

You won’t find much space in the front bar but doorways either side of it lead into quieter rooms where as well as seats you’ll find the shock of a pool table, one of those rare London pleasures. Being just next to Dalston I suppose I’ll have to go with convention and say that the people here are of a slightly icier exterior than in some parts, but then if drinkers descended on your local from miles around, looking for the new Old Blue Last then you’d be peeved too. The quiz night on Mondays is always busy and from then the lull only holds until Thursday when the place is packed again.

The taps here feature the Czech lager, Litovel as well as London Pride and you can find more exotic Belgian beers in the fridges just waiting to be sampled by the one who’s just trekked halfway across London in search of a hip pool table. You got!

Choose wisely...

The George is a small pub in residential Hackney that has grown a reputation over the years for its hip clientele and boss jukebox. The jukebox we can vouch for – you’ll find Beastie Boys, Sister Nancy and Can to name but a few.

As locals go you couldn't really ask for a better pub to have on your doorstep than the Prince George. Good beers on draught - I'm looking at you Palm - and a good atmosphere day or night makes it a no-brainer.

They could do with sorting the buns that come with the burgers and while the jukebox is great, as a regular user it would be nice if they could swap the tunes around a little more frequently. But those two points are me getting picky. It's great and weirdly, for a popular pub in Hackney, you can almost always get a table.
