Exploring the residential streets of Dulwich is always going to throw a pub or two into your mix and if you find yourself on the corner of Northcross and Crystal Palace Road, you’ll find one of its most popular. Covering the spacious ground floor of a big corner block, The Actress is an inviting looking place with a chunk of outdoor seating running down one side of its exterior.

Inside the pub, the décor is all contemporary orange banquets, whitewashed wooden ceiling and weathered wall art. Judging by the amount of tables and stools covering the wooden floorboards finding a table here should generally be straightforward – unless you turn up at 3 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon, of course. Every inch the neighbourhood local, The Actress is your one-stop pub for everything. You’ll find families dining on pizzas from the wood burning oven, groups glued to the big screen’s Sky Sports action and presumably a healthy amount of wanderers – like us - who have stumbled on a smart, welcoming pub with a lively weekend atmosphere. Along with the pizzas (which you can also take away), The Actress serves a mix of reasonably priced food from hotdogs and burgers to weekend brunch.

We drink the Meantime Pale Ale but find out later that The Actress serve their own cask ales, which come brewed straight from their sister pub. An oversight we’ll be back to correct. The pub also has a sizeable beer garden and allows dogs. A relaxed pub surrounded by quiet residential streets, The Actress is one to visit if you’re ever in East Dulwich.
