Southwark Tavern is an unusual pub in that it opens for a few hours in the mornings as there is a vegetable market next door. Other than that (when is is open for regular pub hours) it is a traditional pub with a fire place and fruit machines. They only serve food in the afternoon and offer a selection of beers, ales and spirits. Catering for private parties of up to 50 people is available upon request.

All In London Review

there's a community feel to the Southwark Tavern

Okay, so on a sunny day we’d all rather be drinking outside the market itself but when the weather turns, and we know it always does, the place to pick up where you left off is the Southwark Tavern. Blessed by its location, it’s recently added to its perfect placement with improvements on its menu and it boasts one of the best ranges of draught beer around.

Thirty-seconds from the market and right next to London Bridge, it’s important to state that this is one of the busiest pubs in the area. Literally rammed on Friday and Saturday nights by the usual post-work and pre-club (Shunt was just around the corner and now Arcadia is a few minutes away) drinkers it can get claustrophobic in the bar upstairs, which by day you’ll notice has a small array of high stools at its ledges and some old sofas. Head downstairs and it might not be so squashed but the cavernous charm of the old cells can still feel constricted. Unless you’re in the mood for people, early to midweek visits are a better experience in which to appreciate the foibles of the old basement.

The food here has steered away from the mushy and into a more refined type of pub food and while you can still find burgers and fish and chips, there are also more interesting dishes like grilled mackerel fillets with beet and potato salad (£10.00). The drinks themselves deserve a review of their own thanks to the amount on offer, but to give some idea of the international range, you’ll find Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn Lager, Kirin, Meantime Pale Ale and Peroni- all on tap.

For an area that’s so business-centric there’s a community feel to the Southwark Tavern and even on the busy weekends the market makes it feel, strangely, slightly like the local.
