All In London Review

A collection of real ale from the cask, pedestrian lagers and a small wine selection keeps everyone happy

Tired of Shoreditch and its disco ball irony? In search of a ‘real’ pub that proves you can still find a pint where the only added extras is a bag of crisps? Yes? In that case you’re very much jaded and should head to the Pride of Spitalfields where a bag of cheese and onion and a pint of real ale can soothe that psyche all better.

Located in a rather usual place for a classic old boozer, the Pride of Spitalfields still manages to slot in amongst the curry houses and new-art galleries of Brick Lane in a rather sweet way. The street outside is cobbled, a couple of picnic benches are okay for drinking at and if there’s no space on one of those, then the street itself will make do during the summer. Inside, the tiny pub is a throwback to childhood trips to the local with your parents. A carpet with a pattern designed to disguise stains, fruit machines zinging away in the corner and a collection of characters who each look like they could meet nowhere else but here. This is the Pride’s proud fanfare - a venue that pushes the achingly hip together with crusty locals, loudmouths and tourists. This makes for an entertaining atmosphere with only the slightest discernible level of menace in the air. A jolly place, that’s for sure.

A collection of real ale from the cask, pedestrian lagers and a small wine selection keeps everyone happy and the only complaint is that sport is shown all too infrequently. Definitely a pub deserving of a visit.

Quite simply the best pub in east London. Quality beer, including Fullers. Clientele ranges from trendy, to old locals, to firemen, to intellectuals. Mercifully few hen parties or suits. Survived a fire a few years ago and still going strong.
