Some parts of London will never change, but rather remain time-capsules of a bygone era and gentle reminders of the way things once were. Such is Notting Hill’s Mau Mau, a bar that—more than any other on Portobello road—is a living relic of pre-gentrified West London. This old school multicultural melting pot is Bohemian to its core; a mellow, cosy home away from home for many musicians and artists. Resident cocktails have colourful names like ‘Your Mum’, and with a great selection of rums in stock and some encouragement from the floor, Mau Mau’s amenable bar can produce whatever your tastebuds desire.

Most evenings will find Mau Mau alive with the sound of music, and Sunday afternoons are a chilled-out affair, where drinkers lounge on well-worn sofas and enjoy local talents jamming into the night. During the day it’s the perfect haven from the hubbub of Portobello Market, and one of West London’s most ‘real’ hang outs (no Notting Hill lovies in here). Mau Mau is, in fact, so retro that it only accepts payments in cash. So leave your plastic at home, put a few cocktails down, and feel the irie vibe

My boyfriend and I arrived on Saturday 31st March at 7:30 PM and the 3 girls behind the bar were too busy chit-chatting with one another or texting to take notice of us or take our drinks order.

Shayanna and the band were advertised to start at 8:00 PM but didn't begin playing 'til 9:15 PM.

The Mau Mau Bar has an excellent JBL PA but, unfortunately, only the bass speakers which muffled the vocals to the point of being inaudible.

Someone was sitting behind the DJ turntables but obviously not a sound engineer as he too was 'too busy' to notice how bad the band sounded.

Will we return (for more of the same)?
Not in this lifetime!
If I could award 0, I would.

After Speaking with Bella And Cheryl on the Fruit and Veg stall opposite Oxfam on the Portobello Road, I have decided to do a Benefit Gig in aid of Chamalong Allen, Aka ‘Mrs Tasty’. She had the little Thai food stall on the Portobello Road for the last 20 years and was sadly killed on the 27th of April. Mrs Tasty has left behind 3 children. We are hoping to raise money to help towards living expenses for the children and the funeral costs.R

The Gig is to be held on Monday the 30th of May at the Mau Mau Bar, 265, Portobello Road starting at 6pm. So far we have DJ’s from; the Coffee Plant – Hamish, the Mau Mau - Julian Bicknell and Roifield Brown from My Village Internet Entrepeneur

Greetings

My name's Tommy Kennedy IV, as this is my first message I'll give you some background info... I work for Oxfam in the Music Department on the Portobello Road - we still need volunteers so if you are interested pop in and see John or Jackie. It's a great place to work and good for your karma.
