The east end boozer, the Sun Tavern, just a stumble along the road from Bethnal Green tube, celebrates a wholesale relaunch as it opens under a new guise; this is traditional to the core, but with all the trimmings of modern-day life thrown in to tempt thirsty and trendy Eastenders, and those from further afield through the newly polished and painted doors. Here there are beautifully mixed cocktails, fine ales and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The team behind the intriguingly named bar, Discount Suit Company (29a Wentworth Street) are the masterminds behind this exciting relaunch. Oh, by the way, this is also the one time favourite hangout of the Kray twins.. but you didn't hear it from us.. right?...

All In London Review

A cosy atmosphere and a friendly welcome – two things sorely lacking from many of Bethnal Green’s pubs - The Sun Tavern is a welcome addition to the road.

Review Image
Once upon a time there was nothing at the Tube end of Bethnal Green Road to demand a visit. When the Sun Inn changed hands some time ago that changed. Installing a cosy atmosphere and a friendly welcome – two things sorely lacking from many of Bethnal Green’s pubs – the simple changes have paid off.

Sticking with the charm of what makes London pubs great, the Sun Inn relied on atmosphere over aesthetics to inspire a new dawn. The pub remains crowded with furniture, bits and bobs and the odd design flourish. With low ceilings that create a forced kind of intimacy, this is a true winter pub.

Food is a simple affair – more an accompaniment to the drinks than something to recommend on its own merit. Bread, olives, ploughman’s boards and antipasti are reasonably priced snacks. The great thing about the Sun Inn though, is the real ale rotation, which it takes seriously. For a local, the frequent updates are something to appreciate. Along with regular draught beers you’ll always find three guests on tap. As well as beers The Sun also has an interest in whisky. Its Malt of the Month event welcomes a new tipple at the end of each month with tasting notes accompanying it on the pub’s Facebook.

Between the cosy atmosphere, rotating ales and random events, it’s not a stretch to say that the Sun Inn has revitalized this end of Bethnal Green.

Stylish interior, good lighting; it is a cocktail bar though - weak and sweet mixtures, even when recomnended as "dry"; a vodka cocktail tasted like a fruit smoothie

Since taking over the lease in April this year the landlord, who must be one of the youngest in London, has made a world of difference to this traditional East End pub. He has revived the friendly atmosphere by encouraging a number of clientele to move on and the place has been cleaned up dramatically. There is a good range of products on offer at prices not usually associated with central London, especially before 4.00 in the afternoon. On the first Saturday of the month there is a real party atmosphere which sees the place packed out. On Tuesday nights there is a challenging quiz with a £50 cash prize on offer. Sports fans will feel equally at home with Sky Sports on for big events.
