A proper pub serving a decent pint...
We went on a weekday evening and it wasn’t very busy – although it was cheering to see that kids are allowed inside and that landlord Lee was happily sat at the end of the bar chatting to some of the clientele.
It’s surprisingly large and spacious but still traditional (Victorian) – wooden floors and tables and chairs at all levels – as well as at the bar. There are even nooks with large sofas. The walls are adorned with pictures of, you guessed it, Lord Nelson.
We ordered our drinks and food (we opted for the burgers - £8.45) although the menu offers plenty of other things including: salt and pepper squid (£4.45), cheesy nachos (£3.95/£5.95), fajitas (from £8.95), steaks (£12.95), ribs (£10.95), battered haddock (£8.95), risotto (£8.45), various salads – crumbled Stilton and bacon, Creole salmon and Caesar (from 37.95). There are different menus for lunch, Sunday, children and match days. They also do afternoon tea.
Then we wandered through the slightly raised dining area at the back and passed the kitchen (which you can see very clearly – and everything was spotless) to the large outside area.
There are plenty of picnic benches (even tiny two seater versions) and tables. In the centre is a giant Eucalyptus tree which has been wrapped up in rope lights – very pretty. There’s also a children’s climbing frame. There’s greenery all over the place making the walled space seem rather special – I particularly liked the Wisteria hanging from the roof.
But make no mistake - this is a proper pub serving a decent pint (Fullers) although in the summer heat my friend had opted for a chilled Peroni. I was offered two options of rose wine and I tried both – they were chilled and very drinkable.
I’m also told that whilst it is a primarily a “locals” pub it is frequented by football fans when Brentford are playing at home.
The nearby Globe is also owned by Lee and it’s a more modern bar with a focus on live music events.
