All In London Review

Drinks and food good, customers needed

Down a staircase on Wigmore Street is where you will find Bar 92, in the basement of steakhouse Black & Blue, run by the same people. It’s dimly lit and filled with low-backed sofas, the décor is vaguely New York diner chic and there’s an inviting alcove in one corner, perfect for cosying up away from fellow revellers. The problem is that there is no one else here, which in itself could be a good thing if it means there is the possibility of having a conversation on a Friday night without doing a Mariah Carey impression. On a Tuesday evening however, no one wants to have to whisper self-consciously over their martini in case the barman is eavesdropping for lack of anything else to do.

It hasn’t been open longer than a couple of months however, and the most important factor is what Bar 92 is offering, which is mainly cocktails (although there is a small yet perfectly formed wine and beer selection that includes Pouilly Fuisse and Asahi). The cocktail list is divided into muddles, talls, martinis and sparkling drinks, starting from £8. The Berry Layer Caipirinha is a cleverly composed drink of cachaça, lemongrass and blackberry liquor, each liquid clearly defined through the glass. It’s also very sweet, unlike the bourbon-based Sour Mash Julep where you can clearly taste the alcohol, along with citrusy mint and ginger. The Romeo’s First could be passed off as fruit juice were it not for the funky martini glass with a twisted stem, as it’s a refreshing mixture of apple liquor, lychee juice and lime juice. Oh, there’s vodka too, but you won’t notice that until your bill has mounted considerably.

There is a selection of Mediterranean-inspired bar snacks – chipolata sausages with a fiery Dijonnaise, and a humungous, meat sweat-inducing charcuterie board with thin slices of chorizo, Parma ham, smoked duck breast, pate, pitta bread, pickled gherkin, and tomato chutney for a tenner. They’ve got the drinks, food and layout right, let’s just hope a few people find out about it.
