Railway Tavern

On goes the real ale revolution as London’s pubs continue to offer up alternatives to continental lager. The Railway Tavern and Ale House - to give its full title - is a recently refurbished addition to this long list. Sitting somewhere between the border of Dalston and Islington, the Railway Tavern adopts a classic pub layout that’s been brought into the 21st century with some fairly nifty design touches. Pastel colour ways, sensible benches, bar stools and an open fire at one end of the pub make it a suitably comfortable place to spend an afternoon or an evening in good company.

A drawing room also projects black and white movies onto a white washed wall, so if you’re lacking for company then there’s something to stare at. Don’t forget this is the Railway Tavern and there’s a nod to the name with some sweet transport aesthetics on the walls.

This isn’t just your average local though, and to lure you towards its location, which is perhaps a little off the beaten track, how about live music? Folk is the word and by all accounts it’s always a good time. The atmosphere is charming and if this pub was at the end of your road no doubt you’d happily make it your local. Thai food is served from the kitchen and that can be washed down with one of those great ales. Brew Dog, Darkstar and Meantime all feature on the pumps, plus the excellent Leicher Weizen wheat beer. It’s a solid neighbourhood pub that’s well worth the effort of a visit.
