"Aussie comedy Bogan Bingo rules at The Slug but the late-night pub is fun all week long."Review Rating: Reviewed by T.A.O
Located at Fulham Broadway, a place whose bars are either beer-dealing, late-night party pubs or quaint Italian-esque Campari bars, The Slug is all about the entertainment and finds itself firmly in the late-night party camp. Although given the fact that we visited on a night when the raucous Bogan Bingo were performing, maybe we’re biased.
The Slug is big, full of random Australian memorabilia and geared towards over indulging. Squint and you could just about imagine that you’re not inside a pub spawned after some awkward after-hours liaison between a Walkabout and a Belushi’s. Not that there’s any reason you should want to imagine something different; people come to bars like The Slug for a reason and it’s not the genteel atmosphere, the stunning design or imaginative range of beers behind the bar. It’s fun - that’s the reason - and it’s not even seven before we’ve seen our third group of the night head up to the bar for Jaeger Bombs. Good luck to them.
The aforementioned Bogan Bingo is an Australian comedy act-cum-bingo night that takes over the Slug every Thursday night, selling out almost every week. And we can see why. It’s bingo turned up to eleven and washed down with a Fosters chaser and it’s very funny at times. Discovering the identity of the week’s random prizes that are up for grabs (located on the Wall of Famous Bogans, of course) is worth the entry fee alone. Could be a trip to Morrocco or it could be a cereal dispenser, you just never know.
When it comes time to wash down the Jaeger bombs, there are chilli dogs, chicken wings, burgers and chicken wraps to be eaten. And if you want a ‘regular’ drink then a selection of very ‘regular’ beers and spirits is there for you.
As time ticks on the tables are pushed aside to create a larger dance floor and all the people who have chosen The Slug over all those Italian Campari bars from around the way are rewarded with bangers and chart hits galore till 2am.
