Looking for good Gastro pub food served in a beautiful surrounding? Our Epping Forest Gastro Pub is a truly charming example of Victoriana boho chic… serving up some of the best pub food in Essex all day. With antique crystal chandeliers, timber beams and racy red walls, an instant warmth exudes from both the building and the real log fires within. Fabulous for a family get together or birthday knees-up!

All In London Review

A glorious country escape... but still in London

If you’re looking for information on the Kings Oak pub out in the hills of Epping, then the obvious place to look is the venue’s website. However, when you’re met with a barrage of wedding dresses, ethereal forest posing and marquees you might think you’ve got the wrong place. So it’s lucky you have us to tell you that you have not made a mistake, behind all the glamour of Epping’s premier woodland wedding venue there is a charming pub waiting at the top of High Beach.

The Kings Oak may be a renowned Essex hotel and popular function venue but when you turn up on Sunday lunchtime to see the roads rammed with parked cars, the pub full and the garden taken over by rampaging children, you see it in its element - a family retreat for city dwellers, whether out from London or in from Essex. The huge garden – and we’re talking football pitch huge – is dotted with picnic benches, lush grass and the odd climbing frame. For those who have spent too long sandwiched into the tiny beer gardens of most London pubs, this is a patch worth the short drive/Tube journey out to.

Inside, the pub goes fully gastro, no half measures here. Heavy wood for the seating, fairy lights strung about, blackboards all over the place, the finest Peroni and seasonal pies, moules mariniere and ham, egg & chips. There is also a good selection of real ales on rotation.

As well as being a big draw for families the Kings Oak attracts the active weekend types who favour two wheels over four. Mountain bikers, lycra-clad roadies and ramblers can all be spotted, which dilutes the family feel into a more eclectic clientele. It is well worth the effort of the trip out to this beautiful Epping Forest hideaway – especially in summer.
