All In London Review

Ideal for post-work boozing and carbs

Review Image
It’s clear that Thursday is still the new Friday judging by the noise levels at Barsmith, as it’s barely 8pm and the drunken dancing has already begun. The attractive exposed brick décor and fancy drinks list is more Clerkenwell wine bar than BOGOF boozer, but let’s not typecast.

The cocktails are “infusions”, which basically means the spirits have been pre-mixed with syrups, spices or botanicals to give the flavours a chance to merge together. So the Hot Stuff Baby has citrus-infused vodka, carrot juice, egg white, chilli and ginger, although despite its name it reminds me too much of the orange concoction my health-conscious mother forced me to drink as a child. The rum, ginger and honey-based Barsmith is zingier, while the Basil Fawlty is for the sweet-toothed, made with gin, nectarine elderflower, cranberry and basil syrup. All are a purse-friendly £7.95.

In terms of food there are pizzas and platters of charcuterie and cheese. By the time we arrive they’re out of gluten-free flour, which means my friend faces a night of indigestion, but on the plus side the pizzas are freshly made. Generously portioned, we like the Foraged Spinach (£10), with an egg, Parmesan and black olives. We’d enjoy the spicy Nduja just as much if it wasn’t for the piece of plastic tubing we find in it. Somewhat surprisingly our favourite dish is the very flavoursome super-sized salad of the day, with lamb’s lettuce, avocado, sundried tomatoes, pine nuts, red peppers and mung bean sprouts, almost a meal in itself.

Once the happy hour is over things quieten down a little, but it’s clear this is already a favourite for post-work, carb-laden gatherings.
