All In London Review

L’Orchidee really comes into its own with desserts and macarons

Review Image
Westfield certainly has no shortage of food outlets, but if you fancy something a little more special than Pret and a little more high brow than Nando’s, the delightful patisserie L’Orchidee might be right up your avenue…

Situated in The Village at Westfield, L’Orchidee’s second branch opened back in April, a sister outlet to its Stratford boutique, which opened in 2011. The French patisserie is a gorgeously girly spot for a special lunch, with marble café tables, pink Louis XVI style chairs and a crystal chandelier offering the perfect setting. My dream décor.

A typically French menu, with a modern British twist, is inspired by the different countries visited by Le Cordon Bleu trained head chef, Daniel Garcia. An la carte menu, serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon high teas and light luxurious dinner options. We arrived after a spot of shopping for a light lunch, beginning with some rather tasty, though ever so slightly dry, lobster brioche rolls served with a curried cream of mussels and finished with salmon roe, though with other speciality sandwiches on the menu including whipped brie and figs on poppy seed short bread, foie gras with cherry compote and confit of duck with caramelied onions, it was a tough one to call. Cocktails are plentiful and delicious; we felt it only fair to sample a couple of them and can certainly vouch for the delicious English Rose of rose water, crème de cassis and gin topped with prosecco and finished with sugared rose petals, along with the Flower Delicacy; raspberry infused vodka and grenadine topped with champagne and garnished with an edible hibiscus flower.

Where L’Orchidee really comes into its own is, of course, its desserts and macarons. They. Are. Delicious. Cheesecakes and tarts, mousses and biscuits, drizzled in chocolate, sprinkled with nuts and filled with the freshest cream; I defy to eat just one. The macarons are something else; with a host of establishments from which to choose in London, you need to give these a try. Our mouths proved almost bigger than our bellies as we tucked into a plate of them, with flavours including lavender, delicate jasmine, sumptuous Ferrero Rocher, white chocolate, chocolate brownie, salted caramel and a ridiculously delicious peanut butter. I admit I’ve already been back twice to buy a box…
