HISTORY; The Central YMCA was once a much bigger building, occupying the whole block (with Gt. Russell St & Tottenham Court Rd. as boundaries). It had a gym., theatre, swimmimg-pool, and scores of rooms to rent. I had one for 3 years, from 1954 to 1957, as a student (of Optometry). There were many clubs and activities ( I started a Cycling Club). Residents and members came from all over the world and socially it was of course very enlightening. But unbeknown to me, the building (of Portland ashlars) was demolished at some point, and the YMCA shrank. Does anyone have any photographs of what the old place was like ? Bill ("Fritz") Carlyle.

This is a good club.
If you are on benefits, it is excellent value
BUT - if you are disabled, I would strongly advise you to look elsewhere
The facilities are 3 floors underground. The lift is generally out of action
They bought a cheap lift, in need of frequent maintenance, bought from Denmark with spares from Italy!
The management have little concern for the high percentage of disabled members using this club.
DO NOT JOIN!
