Fortnum & Mason is one of London's smartest department stores and it sells the very best of everything - including fabulous food items, sumptuous tableware and designer womenswear. This is still the place to go for a formal afternoon tea. Established in 1707, this is where Scott of the Antarctic stocked up on groceries and provisions. Excellent gift ideas abound. Also located within are: the Fountain Restaurant, Patio Restaurant, Salmon & Champagne Bar and the St James's Restaurant.

Fortnum and Mason has been selling tea for over 300 years, which is some CV. This year their new Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon was opened by none other than HM the Queen, who offered it the Royal approval. £38.00 will buy you finger sandwiches, scones and a selection of cakes from the Diamond Jubilee Cake Carriage plus Fortnum’s Classic Blend Tea.

Before attending the Van Gogh exhibition opposite at the Royal Academy my husband and I decided to treat ourselves to lunch at Fortnum and Mason. After only a short wait, the manager showed us to a table. Although we were only two, the table was for four which was quite nice which gave us amples space for our coats etc. and we were not on top of the people at the next table. However, the food was a huge disappointment and greatly overpriced. Starter beetroot salads were tasteless, beetroot rock hard and generally unimaginitive. Main course halibut tasted good but "spring vegetables" as a side order were nothing more than another salad...no spring vegetables whatsoever!! We did not order dessert, only coffee , so starter, main course and coffee came to over £100.00!!!! What a rip-off. We should have gone to the Wolesey which has more choice and much better value and far better atmosphere. Oh well.
