I wanted to buy a 35mm film camera and a friend recommended that I visit Camera City. The staff were polite, enthusiastic and helpful and were patient ensuring that I buy the best camera in my budget. This little shop has character and warmth, one of London's gems, an Alladin's cave.

I strongly advise anyone going to camera city for repairs to think twice. this man is not willing to deal with his own cowboy behaviour. I took in my beloved rangefinder camera for a fix and after three weeks of being made to feel like i was nagging him to tell me when it will be ready, i turned up to find my cameras fixed lense had been prized off in a way i can only describe as brutal and glued back in with a solvent that had burnt away the plastic ring that had been put in backwards!( apparently this was the only way to fix it and he couldnt ask me if it was ok to prize it off as he 'was fixing it at 2 in the morning so didnt want to wake me up... I could go on but in short this guy is a cowboy and is only interested in selling cameras extortionately and fixing things that ain't broke.
I have to buy a new camera and i am gonna warn people as long as i can to avoid that place like the plague

I visited camera city to buy a digital slr, the man in the shop spent 20 mins goin through a wide range of second hand cameras and lenses with me, i found him to be very helpful and pleasant. he wrote out all the prices and told me to go away and look them up and see which one would suit me the most, i called the next day and even though he sounded busy again he gave me sound advice on lenses, i returned to the shop 2 weeks later and he remembered my name and what we had been looking at, i decided on a camera which he spent half an hour with me showing me how to use it, he then put me in touch with helpful forums and websites.i definetly recomend camera city, i will be goin back again.

My experience was disappointing, I went in a week ago to sell my mint camera and was offered £20, £100 less than an inferior model in the window. Largely it seems because the light seals were starting to perish, hardly surprising after 20 years, and he said that would be a costly job. Well, I know different! I am all for retailers making a decent profit (I used to be one) but don't appreciate insulting offers. He could have had it for £40 (half what they sell for on ebay), £10 to do the seals, and still made made £80-100.
On the plus side is that there was indeed a great selection of camera's in excellent condition and at fair prices. Just be sure to ask if the one you want is a "commission sale" and if so haggle very hard, too many dealers in London are playing this game - you are better off buying direct from the real owner not a middle man who is pushing up the price.
I would probably still buy a camera outright from him, but I'd not waste my time trying to sell, or part exchange one, as he does come across as a slightly iffy second hand car salesman and one.
My advice is stick to ebay to sell you non Nikon or Leica.

Plus points: Great selection of second hand cameras. Ranging from medium format to lomo. Enthusiasts looking for something special could find it here. Negative points: The guy running it lacks any sales skills and comes across like a car salesman: Defensive, forthcoming, pushy and aggressive when it suits him. Was given a warm welcome during my first visit to discuss a potential part exchange, but the following day was initimidated and ridiculed for attempting said part exchange. Word of warning - If you intend to do business here, be prepared to work for it. This isn't a high street shop where you take something off the shelf and pay for it.
