All In London Review

Pretty Indian café in London’s most touristy area

There may be little to attract a Londoner to Covent Garden Market these days, as despite its numerous upmarket shops it’s still more of a tourist haunt than a shopping destination, surrounded by overpriced coffee shops and uninspired pizzerias. It’s therefore nice to know that right in the midst of this madness, of the opera singing, the acrobatic displays, and the lost visitors asking for the nearest McDonald’s, is what could be described somewhat lamely as an oasis of calm. That place is called Café Chutney. You may laugh at the name (and no, they are not experimenting with a new range of cumin-infused coffees) but this compact venue is essentially a café serving Indian street food. The menu has samosas, bhajis and wraps with spicy meat or vegetable fillings, and to drink there are chais, lassis and fresh juices as well as conventional hot and soft drinks. The cavernous, teensy space it inhabits, filled with cushioned stools and banquettes, is beautiful when compared to what is outside; its only downfall is that being so small it has a tendency to fill up quickly, luckily there’s that McDonald’s close by to take some of the passing trade.

Such a happy find one evening after a show. Great to find somewhere different in this location. The chicken tikka naan is delicious. So much so that my son and I have been on both our (rare) visits to London to repeat the experience. The carrot, ginger and ?lime juice is perfect to refresh a jaded tourist. We found the service very friendly and were offered a free extra juice to taste. Fun to have the buskers just outside too.
I only wish there was a branch in Brighton.

The worst experience since I moved to London. We literally spent 30 to 40 minutes having coffee and tea when the waitress - owner asked us in a rude manner to pay and leave. OMG!!! It was such an awful approach and inpolite way of treating us supporting that they pay rent and they need more customers to fill the place.

Stay away from this place. Spend your nice money somewhere else.

This was the worst Covent garden garden experience I have ever had. When I finished my coffee and snacks I was actually asked to leave!!! Shocking!!!
This was 1 minute after I had finished. Yes you read that correctly. Not only was I asked to leave, but the OWNER came to see me with a mouth full of food and had the cheek to tell me she was forced to leave her lunch so she could come and ask me to leave. Customer service has much to be desired here. To say I was shocked would be very much and understatement!!!! Stay very clear if you want to relax. This will not happen!!!
