Great breakfasts - no wonder everyone wants to live in Stoke Newington

Both Stoke Newington Road and Church Street have their fair share of cafes, which makes it all the more disappointing that we have been thwarted from visiting the Fat Cat Café so many times by the full tables. Granted, this just happens to be the result of the quality of the café but really, spread the love to the other cafes people, so that one may always find a free space at the Fat Cat.

Located on Church Street, the simple corner café utilises its space well. Outdoor seating is there for when the weather permits and the interior is packed with as much seating as possible for the relatively compact unit. Usually such sticklers for space between tables, somehow the Fat Cat Café manages to make us forget our ingrained problems with encroachment with its warm, relaxed atmosphere. We sit squashed against one of the large windows that keeps the café looking bright in the AM and opt for the breakfast food that we’ve been recommended.

Since a café should be judged on its Full English that is what we order. However, we also take a portion of eggs Benedict to get a taste of a more delicate dish. And the result? Why can’t all breakfasts be this good. Really. The Full English is only as good as its sausage and this is one mighty sausage. The ingredients speak through the accompanying grease and it’s a hit. The eggs Benedict are just as well executed. The Hollandaise smothers two excellent poached eggs with a viscosity that deserves, nay, demands respect.

We leave the Fat Cat Café with our caps dothed to a fine establishment that knows how to serve breakfast. We will be back for mains, since we hear that they also come in for praise for both quality and value. If you’re a Stoke Newington local then lucky you to have such a sturdy breakfast saviour right on your doorstep.

If I'm in the mood for a walk up into Stoke Newington then I always try to stop here. The breakfasts are always excellent. You seem to pay a lot for a full English these days but here it is well worth it.

Found the Fat Cat by chance on a Sunday morning and ordered the Full English for 7.50. I can honestly say I can't remember having a better one. Two perfectly poached eggs, toasted homemade bread, beautifully cooked delicious bacon, a good sausage, mushrooms, tomato and great homemade beans. Faultless, and there's real HP sauce on the table. Followed it with a top-class flat white coffe, not something you can get in many places. All-round brilliant food and lovely service. Thoroughly recommended.
